WGU pioneered competency-based education. Competency-based education measures learning rather than time. Students progress through courses as soon as they can prove they’ve mastered the material, rather than advancing only when the semester or term ends. With 24/7 access to online learning resources to engage with on their schedule, students embark on a learning journey tailored exactly to where their knowledge currently is—and where it needs to be. In addition, faculty members are on hand to provide personalized, one-on-one learning support when it’s needed.
An online university created just for you. We help our students achieve their dreams for a degree and career success by providing personal, flexible and affordable education based on real-world competencies.
Western Governors University (WGU) is an National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) accredited leader in online teacher education, serving students nationwide. WGU has been different since the very beginning. Designed in 1995 by 19 US governors, these founders sought to break the mold of traditional higher education and build a new and innovative model: one that harnessed technology to teach in new ways, focused on measuring learning rather than seat time, and provided more Americans the opportunity to complete their education, build their careers and better their lives.
As a competency-based, student-focused, online, nonprofit university, WGU is designed with students in mind—particularly, the busy, working, adult student who wants to earn a bachelor's or master's degree but for whom a traditional university education is not feasible.
At WGU, students learn, independent of time or place, and earn competency-based degrees that are credible to both academic institutions and employers. And because we are nonprofit, our tuition is half the price of many other schools.
When I first learned about WGU Missouri I thought it was too good to be true. The courses were all online. I could study and take assessments when it was convenient for me instead of having to stick to a strict schedule like I would have at a traditional school. And most of all, it was affordable.
An education degree for their future and yours. You have a calling: to help students get the most out of their education. Make sure you get the most out of yours. Earn a teaching degree for about half the cost of what you’d pay at other online universities. Our student obsession means you get flexibility, affordability, quality and personalized support.
Great news! Through the generosity of numerous corporations and foundations, plus special federal government appropriations, WGU maintains a robust program of scholarships made available to qualified students, including teachers. These include such college-specific scholarships as the Become a Teacher scholarship and the WGU Loves Teachers scholarship, for approximately $2,000.
The Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program provides part-time employment while students are enrolled in an institution to help pay for education expenses.
Some students may qualify for a work-study position in states where WGU has a state affiliate, provided they meet the general eligibility criteria. FWS is a need-based program that allows students to earn money to help offset the costs of attending WGU. Limited funding has been given to WGU for this program; therefore, not all eligible students will receive an award. Priority will be given to students who indicate “yes” to the FAFSA question about Work Study. The maximum award is the cost of attendance (COA) minus expected family contribution (EFC) and other financial assistance. This program encourages community service work and work related to the student’s course of study.
FWS employment is governed by employment conditions, including the rate of pay that is appropriate and reasonable according to the type of work performed, the geographic region, the employee’s proficiency and any applicable federal, state or local law, including state or locally established minimum wage rates.
