Hear from Jan Madlock about sharing her passion for science—and the inspiration she drew from teachers in her own life—with students at Bonner Springs.
Teacher Ambassador
I have always enjoyed working with students, and I have a passion for science. So, it has been a wonderful experience to share my passion. I also had many wonderful teachers in my life who contributed to my desire to become a teacher. I really enjoy getting to know my students. I learn so much from them. It is challenging when students do not care about learning the material you are presenting, or when they bring stresses from home into the classroom on a daily basis.
Adaptability is an important characteristic because teachers need to be able to adjust their plans to accommodate a dynamic learning environment. Students come into the classroom with varying experience, ability and interest. We adapt constantly to suit the needs of a wide variety of students. I also think good planning, leadership and motivation skills are important. Finally, a great teacher needs to genuinely like the young people they are working with. You may not "love" every kid on every day, but you have to like the age group and students in general in order to connect with them.
